my SF favorites: what to do, where to eat, & what to wear.

There’s no hiding my love for San Francisco. It’s a city that I hadn’t spent a ton of time in, until my sister moved there 3 years ago… and now has quickly become one of my favorites. There’s a little bit of something for everyone. So many things to do and see, places to eat, and areas to explore. Having spent this past summer in San Francisco (while waiting for my UK visa), I really got to know the city on a whole new level. It was fun to pretend like I lived there for a couple months! So I thought I’d put together a little guide of all my SF faves- what to do, where to eat, and what to wear! Of course all of the touristy stuff is a must if you’ve never visited the city, but this guide is all about doing, eating, dressing, and living like a local.

{ Shop & Explore }

Chestnut Street in the Marina //  the marina is my favorite neighborhood in SF. i may be a bit biased because that’s where my sister lives and where i’ve spent the most time, but i just love the casual, beachy vibe. there’s lots of cute shops, wine bars, and yummy places to grab a bite to eat.

Union Street in Cow Hollow // just a couple blocks up from chestnut is union street. another great place to wander around… with bars, restaurants, and shops galore!

Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights // if you’re feeling up for it after your time on union street, take the stairs up to pacific heights (taking in the gorgeous view along the way!) and make your way over to fillmore street for some more eating and shopping (two of my favorite things, can you tell? ;). i also love wandering the streets of pacific heights… some of the most gorgeous homes with the most insane views!

Downtown Shopping // in case you haven’t shopped enough ;)… downtown has all the big name shops and department stores you’ll ever need.

{ Weekending }

Favorite Sunday routine // grabbing a coffee at the philz truck on the marina green, enjoying a nice walk to the golden gate bridge, and making a trip to the marina farmer’s market at fort mason! bundle up, it can be windy by the water!

Off the Grid // a food truck festival with live music that takes place friday night at fort mason! soooo fun and such a cool vibe. if you miss it on Friday night, you can also catch the food trucks on sundays for a picnic in the presidio!

Try a new coffee shop // finding cute new coffee shops is one of our favorite things to do, and there’s no shortage of cool ones in this city. we even did a post on all of our SF faves!

The Ferry Building // reminds me of pike place market in seattle, but in a gorgeously renovated historic building with lots going on inside. the best thing about the ferry building? all the food options! there’s also a farmers market here a few times a week. can’t be missed!

Coffee and ice cream in Hayes Valley // hayes valley is a cool, artsy neigborhood with lots to explore. interesting boutiques, quirky coffee shops, and a smitten ice cream! a fun little afternoon.

{ Sweat it out }

Urban Hike // one of our favorite weekend activities. what better way to explore the city and get some exercise at the same time. check out our urban hike post for ideas!

Barry’s and Soul Cycle // if you’re looking for a good sweat sesh, you are in the right place! SF has probably every type of trendy workout class you could ever imagine. barry’s and soul cycle are two of my faves! make sure to book a class ahead of time.

{ A few of my faves in the Marina }

Tacolicious // i could eat at t-lish everyday. yummy mexican food and a fun atmosphere… this place is pretty much always lively and packed! my go-to is the marina girl salad with carnitas. with some chips and guac of course. and don’t forget a margarita! d-lishhhhh.

Blue Barn // there’s a couple locations… one on chestnut and one on polk street. big, delicious salads and sandwiches. a neighborhood fave.

Delarosa // yummy appetizers (you must get the burrata bruschetta with hazelnut and honey and the kale caesar salad) and really good pizza! great for lunch or dinner. another spot in the marina that’s always buzzing!

Causwells // best. burger. ever. the other things on the menu look great too… but i’ve only ever had (and probably will only ever get) the burger at this cute spot. it’s like a fancy, gourmet in-n-out burger. you’re welcome.

{ Brunch faves }

The Mill // different types of toast on freshly baked bread + coffee. the perfect sunday morning combination if you ask me!

Basik Cafe // the yummiest acai bowls! our favorite quick breakfast stop on our weekend urban hikes.

Rose’s Cafe  // located on union street, rose’s is a go-to for brunch. grab a bistro table outside and enjoy brunchin’ as the locals do.

Presidio Social Club // super charming restaurant in the presidio. perfect for a boozy brunch with friends!

{ Night on the town }

Top of the Mark // located at the very top of the intercontinental hotel, the views are pretty amazing as you can imagine. a great spot to grab drinks and apps with girlfriends on a night out!

Park Tavern // a stylish and trendy bistro with a great menu in north beach. also amazing for brunch! park tavern is a staple. (and they take reservations!)

Wayfare Tavern // another popular spot with a great ambiance for a fun dinner out with friends. actually reminds of a modern english pub! lots of interesting and yummy things on the menu.

{ And a few more… }

Jane // a great lunch spot nestled on fillmore in pacific heights. yummy salads and good coffee.

Delfina // a cute little pizza spot off of fillmore in pac heights. and right next door to a smitten ice cream shop. 😉 pizza and ice cream… you can’t go wrong!

Layers, layers, layers! // the weather in SF is unpredictable (especially in the summer months), so wearing layers that are easy to put on or take off is my best tip! flannels, vests, scarves, light sweaters and jackets.

Leather jacket // one of my favorite things about SF is the casual, cool vibe of the city. making a leather jacket the perfect wardrobe staple. wear it with ripped jeans and nikes during the day, and throw on a pair of booties or heels at night!

Hat // in case you haven’t noticed, i love a good hat ;). and between the wind and karl the fog (yes, the fog has a name AND an instagram.. not even kidding), a hat is an absolute essential in this city!

Sneaks // SF is a walking city. so comfy shoes are a must! lucky for us, cute sneakers are all the rage right now and one of my favorite trends.

Well that just about covers it! I probably could go on and on. I really do love this city and hope you find this guide useful… whether you’re planning a trip to SF or live in the city and are looking for some new places to explore!

What are some of your favorite things to do and places to eat in San Francisco?! Would love to hear from you as I’m always looking to add to the list 🙂
